OUTBREAK UPDATE – NOVEMBER 24, 2025

The Kokomo Humane Society continues to manage a strep zoo (streptococcus zooepidemicus) infectious disease outbreak and re-infection at the shelter. The animals have improved with treatment however the shelter has experienced several rounds of reinfection. While these reoccurrences have prolonged emergency outbreak measures, Kokomo Humane is encouraged that fewer animals are becoming ill which each reinfection occurrence. Every new animal intake is a potential host for strep zoo bacteria to infect, causing risk for the animals and making it more difficult to eradicate strep zoo from the building.

Until this situation is fully resolved, the shelter has enacted the recommended emergency intake protocol. Only emergency strays (injured or aggressive dogs or injured cats) meet immediate intake criteria. Situations that don’t meet emergency intake criteria are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Kokomo Humane asks that residents not surrender their pets or bring lost or stray animals to the shelter until further notice. If an animal is posing a risk to the public, please call 765-452-6224. Kokomo Humane can help interested parties with temporary foster guidance and supplies. The Cat Café is closed until further notice.

Kokomo Humane continues to host adoption events at off-site locations featuring animals that have been cared for by Kokomo Humane fosterers outside of the shelter. Adoption of animals sheltered in the building are considered on a case-by-case basis. Animals that do not have symptoms and are not in the vicinity of symptomatic animals are considered for informed and interested adopters.

Kokomo Humane continues to make operational adjustments, including rigorous cleaning and disinfecting measures to manage through this outbreak and re-infection. Protecting the welfare of the staff, animals and the community remains our highest priority.

MORE ON STREP ZOO
The seriousness of a strep zoo outbreak cannot be underestimated. Strep zoo is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can cause hemorrhagic pneumonia (and rapid death). While very rare, these bacteria can infect humans.

The close proximity inherent in animal shelters increases the rapid transmission of strep zoo. Resolution involves rapid identification, separation and treatment with antibiotics. There is no vaccine to treat or prevent strep zoo and the potential for reinfection is high. It is important to reduce overcrowding in the shelter environment. Strict cleaning and disinfection protocols must be followed, paired with additional biosecurity measures.

EXPERT GUIDANCE
Kokomo Humane continues to work with trusted veterinarians and animal health experts at Purdue and Best Friends Animal Society to contain and eliminate this outbreak, while providing excellent treatment for the animals in shelter care. There is much that is still unknown about strep zoo and its rapid transmission. Kokomo Humane staff remains vigilant in identifying and treating the infection and maintaining its rigorous cleaning and disinfecting protocols as recommended.

THANK YOU
Kokomo Humane is thankful for the community’s continued support and understanding. Delaying surrender of your own animal, choosing to independently foster animals in need, donating resources, and having patience navigating unique adoption considerations make a difference.
