Why Teach a Child to be Humane?

By teaching a child about caring for a pet, interacting with a pet, and choosing a pet for life....

...We can promote responsibility, kindness, and commitment.

By teaching a child about stray animals, animal laws, respecting your neighbors and community...

...We can promote good citizenship and animal safety.

By teaching a child about wildlife, habitats, and the environment...

...We can promote respect, regard, and appreciation for nature and the inter-relatedness of all things.

By teaching a child about pet overpopulation, animal cruelty, endangered animals, and animal welfare...

...We can provide them with knowledge, awareness, and empowerment.

And finally, when that child begins to consider the lives and feelings of others....

...We have promoted compassion, understanding, and empathy.

We believe that humane education is the key to a more compassionate future for the animals that share the earth with us.

Why humane education?
Humane education is more than just teaching the public about responsible pet care.  Humane education is a type of character education which teaches the principles of justice, goodwill, and humanity toward all life. The spirit of kindness towards animals can be the starting point for the development of a larger humanity which treats all people and all living things with respect.  If children learn these valuable lessons while they are young, they will grow to be kinder and more compassionate adults. Ignorance of animal behavior, unrealistic expectations for animals and children, and an inability to see animals as fellow beings on this planet is a common reason family pets are surrendered to local shelters every day. The traits needed to be caring, thoughtful, and involved citizens are the same ones needed to be good pet owners: responsibility, compassion, trustworthiness, knowledge, respect, and a positive attitude.girl1
By working with local schools and other organizations, humane educators promote change in the community that helps not only animals, but the entire community.

Humane education teaches the children and the adults in our community

  • The value of kindness
  • Respect for animals and the environment.
  • How to properly care for animals.
  • The way animals behave.
  • The consequences of irresponsible behavior toward animals.

The Kokomo Humane Society understands the key role humane education plays in reaching the public to better inform them about treating animals humanely and responsibly.  For that reason we are committed to providing the public with humane education programs, materials and resources.
